Our story
Starting Small
What began in the nineties with James Cox’s passion for animals, traveling pony rides and petting zoos slowly grew to provide forever homes for hundreds of neglected, abandoned, and surrendered exotic animals.
Since the loss of our founder in 2021, James’s sons and present directors of the zoo, Cade and Corbin, have worked to carry on his vision and provide our community with educational resources, inspire a passion for conservation, and offer a truly unique experience.
Wild for Wildlife
After receiving numerous phone calls asking for help with injured and abandon wildlife, the need for wildlife rehabilitative services in our community was obvious. So we began and completed the process to become a licensed rehabilitation facility. We are licensed with TWRA and USDA.
Up in Flames
In 2017, a devastating fire took our entire barn, housing all of our indoor species. Although the Cox family and friends repeatedly entered the burning building in an effort to save as many animals as possible, hundreds of animals were lost. Thanks to our community, we were able to rebuild and are continuously making improvements.
OUR MISSION
More than a zoo. A place for rescue, education and second chances.
Our mission at The Little Ponderosa Zoo and Rescue is to provide a safe, caring home for animals in need while creating meaningful opportunities for people to connect with wildlife.
As a non-profit zoo and rescue we care for a diverse collection of animals, including many who have been rescued, surrendered, or otherwise unable to return to the wild. Through responsible animal care, education and rehabilitation we hope to support conservation by inspiring respect and compassion for nature and the animals we share it with.
Our work extends beyond the zoo grounds through our native wildlife rehabilitation program, educational outreach, community events, and programs that bring people and animals together.
Every visit, donation, sponsorship, and volunteer hour helps us provide care for the animals who call Little Ponderosa home and continue our work helping animals in need.
